Multicultural Literacies : Dialect, Discourse, and Diversity

Description

While many professionals argue about the validity and acceptability of the non-dominant dialects/discourse systems of minority groups, schools and colleges continue to discriminate against and penalize students who use non-dominant dialects and discourse. This study describes and analyzes non-dominant dialects/discourse systems associated with certain cultural groups in the U.S. and examines their school experiences. Building from the theoretical foundations of critical, liberatory literacy and whole language approaches to teaching, the book suggests classroom approaches designed to help teach people from various cultures to improve their own literacy levels without losing their individual/cultural identities.

This book will appeal to the countless women who resent that their husbands never listen and that they have to nag in order to get them to do anything around the house; who feel like their husbands are always pawing at them to have sex and who want more from their marriage. It will appeal Did the Greeks Believe in Their Myths?: Essay on the Constitutive Imagination pdf to men who want to have more sex, less nagging and wives who adore them. In short it's a hard-hitting, no-nonsense guidebook for men and women with a central, controversial argument: the man is primarily responsible for the marital problems. Alter says to women: You are right to want what you want from him." He says to men: Stop thinking it's your wife's fault, and transform yourself into the good husband you know you have in you." In 44 short chapters, her describes the problem areas men face and what actions they can take to fix them. Chapters include How to Know When You're Being a Man as Opposed to When You're Being an Asshole" How to Talk to Her" "Your Anger: Cut the Shit." Alter's approach is straightforward and logical; he speaks to men in a language they understand. In addition, some of the book will be geared to women where Alter will give advice on what they can do.

The style is brilliant and exhilarating." Jasper Griffin, "Times Literary Supplement""

Aniela Jaffe: The Myth and Meaning in the Work of C. G. Jung

The Myth and Meaning in the Work of C. G. Jung

Description

Aniela Jeffe explores the subjective world of inner experience. In so doing, she follows the path of the pioneering Swiss psychologist C.G. Jung, whose collaborator and friend she was through the final decades of his life. Frau Jaffe shows that any search of meaning ultimately leads to the inner "mythical" realm and must be understood as a limited subjective attempt to answer the unanswerable. Any conclusion drawn from such a quest is one's very own - its formulation is one's own myth.

Rebecca Skinner,Graham Turner: British Paratrooper 1940-45

British Paratrooper 1940-45

Description

Inspired by the exploits of the German Fallschirmjager in the blitzkrieg campaigns, Winston Churchill called for the formation of a 5,000-strong Airborne Force in June 1940. From these beginnings The Parachute Regiment became one of the foremost units of the British Army both in World War II and up to the present day. This new history of the British Paratrooper, from 1940 to 1945, details the unique training, weapons and equipment used by these elite troops. A wealth of first-hand and until now unpublished materials brings the history of the ordinary paratrooper to life, drawing on the author's position as a former curator of the Regimental Museum. Illustrations and photographs illuminate the equipment and combat performance of the elite 'Paras' in the context of some of the most significant campaigns of World War II, including D-Day and Operation Market-Garden.

It is estimated that one in ten U.S. adults suffers from chronic insomnia. If left untreated, chronic insomnia reduces quality of life and increases risk for psychiatric and medical disease, especially depression and anxiety. There are two forms of insomnia: secondary insomnia, in which it is comorbid with another condition such as psychiatric disorders, chronic pain conditions, or cardiopulmonary disorders, and primary insomnia, which does not coexist with any other disorder, Though insomnia may be caused by any number of things, it is primarily sustained by the development of poor sleep habits (such as varying sleep-wake schedule, daytime napping, and spending excessive time in bed) as an attempt to manage the problem. This treatment program uses cognitive-behavioral therapy methods to correct those poor sleep habits. CBT has been proven in multiple studies to No Means No!: Teaching Personal Boundaries, Consent; Empowering Children by Respecting Their Choices and Right to Say 'No!' free download pdf improve sleep hygiene by reducing time spent in bed before sleep onset, reducing time spent awake after first sleep onset, and increasing the quality and efficiency of sleep. Developed by the authors, this evidence based treatment can be used for both primary and secondary insomnia sufferers.

No Means No!: Teaching Personal Boundaries, Consent; Empowering Children by Respecting Their Choices and Right to Say 'No!'

Description

'No Means No!' is a children's picture book about an empowered little girl who has a very strong and clear voice in all issues, especially those relating to her body and personal boundaries. This book can be read to children from 3 to 9 years. It is a springboard for discussions regarding children's choices and their rights. The 'Note to the Reader' at the beginning of the book and the 'Discussion Questions' on the final pages, guide and enhance this essential discussion. It is crucial that our children, from a very young age, are taught to have a clear, strong voice in regards to their rights - especially about their bodies. In this way, they will have the confidence to speak up when they are unhappy or feel uncomfortable in any situation. A strong, confident voice as a young child converts to a strong, confident pre-teen, teenager and adult. With the prevalence today of online and offline bullying and various forms of abuse, such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse; our young people need to learn (from a young age) to always speak up when their rights are not being respected. The aim of this book is to empower young children and to give them a voice so they can grow up into empowered adults. When a child, teenager or adult says, 'No!' to any form of coercion, this should be immediately respected. A world where 'No!' does actually mean 'No!' can be a world with far less violence and increased respect for humankind. By educating our children to have true respect for one another, this world can be a much safer and more positive place. Body Safety Education (aka sexual abuse prevention education) empowers girls and boys through knowledge, and teaches them they have the right to say, 'No' and to respect other's personal boundaries. Both girls and boys need to learn to ask for consent and this can be taught from a very young age. Some of the scenarios in this book are typical of approaches used by sexual abusers (sexual predators/molesters/pedophiles) when grooming children for sexual abuse. Their aim is to desensitize the child to having their personal space violated and desensitize them to touch. For more information on Body Safety Education and how to teach it to your child go to www.secrets.info

Games Trainers Play: Experimental Learning Exercises

Description

How often have you tried to get a training program underway only to be met by silent stares from your audience? Or started a session with a bang and watched it fizzle out as the course progressed? Here's the book that can help you break the ice and get participants to really participate. It's packed with over 100 different exercises, activities, and training aids that have been proven effective in a variety of group situations. Each of these games has three common characteristics: all can be administered in less than 30 minutes; they involve very little advance preparation; you can adapt them for a variety of purposes. Each exercise is printed on a perforated, 3-hole punched sheet so you can remove them from the book and add them to your own workshop materials. In addition, several of the exercises include transparency masters.

The Wombles Go Round the World

Description

Great Uncle Bulgaria loves telling the ancient and revered history of the Womble clans to the younger Wombles. But to his great sadness he notices that the young Wombles are not nearly as interested in the history as he is. So Great Uncle Bulgaria decides to take action and show these young Wombles how wonderful - and international - the history of the Wombles is. Tobermory invents some very eco-friendly clockwork air balloons to travel in and Orinoco, Bungo, Tomsk and Wellington are sent variously to America, Tibet and Australia. In these interesting and far-flung places the young Wombles get quite as much excitement as they could wish for!

Incorporating the latest research throughout, Daniel Levi's Fifth Edition explains the basic psychological concepts of group dynamics, focusing on their application with teams in the workplace. Grounded in psychology research and a practical focus on organizational behavior issues, this engaging book helps readers understand and more effectively participate in teams. From the celebrated author of The Dance of Anger comes an extraordinary book about mothering and how it transforms us -- and all our relationships -- inside and out. Written from her dual perspective as a psychologist and a mother, Lerner brings us deeply personal tales that run the gamut from the hilarious to the heart-wrenching. From birth or adoption to the empty nest, The Mother Dance teaches For the Roses free pdf the basic lessons of motherhood: that we are not in control of what happens to our children, that most of what we worry about doesn't happen, and that our children will love us with all our imperfections if we can do the same for them. Here is a gloriously witty and moving book about what it means to dance the mother dance.

Julie Garwood: For the Roses

For the Roses

Description

No one ever knew what kind of strays, from animals to weary travelers, Mary Rose Clayborne would bring home next. Sometimes her four brotherso runaway slave Adam, ax-pickpocket Douglas, gunslinger Cole, and con man Travis -- wondered whether her boarding school education did a lick of good now that their beautiful, impulsive little sister was back in Blue Belle, Montana. Of course, everyone in town knew better than to mess with the Claybornes. The brothers, four of the toughest hombres in the West, had once been a mismatched gang of street urchins. But they had found an abandoned baby girl in a New York City alley, named her Mary Rose, headed West, and raised her to be a lady. Through the years the Claybornes had become a family, held together by loyalty and love if not by blood -- when they suddenly faced the crisis that could tear them apart. That crisis came to town with Lord Harrison Stanford MacDonald. In his fine clothes, he looked every inch a dude. Mary Rose figured that if she didn't interfere, this handsome Englishman would get himself killed, so she took him home to the Clayborne ranch to ask her brothers to turn him into a cowboy. She didn't suspect MacDonald was a chameleon, not the greenhorn he appeared to be. He'd prove fast with a gun, quick with his fists, and capable of commanding the Claybornes's respect -- if not their trust. He'd also soon be desperately in love with Mary Rose. She returned his affection blissfully and wholeheartedly...until MacDonald revealed a secret that challenged everything she believed about her love, herself, and her life. Now Mary Rose's search for identity and meaning would begin, sending her to England, to the family she lost longago. Her soul hungered for the freedom of the American West, but she was being drawn away from all she cared about by the need to know her past...and by her uncertain but still potent love for MacDonald. Torn between conflicting loyalties, Mary Rose wasn't sure who she really was, or where she belonged...questions that could only be answered if she listened to the truth within her heart.

The Two Babylons: Or the Papal Worship.... [Complete Book Edition, Not Pamphlet Edition]

Description

2010 Reprint of 1916 Edition. This book was initially published in 1853 as a pamphlet, then greatly revised and expanded and released as a book in 1858 (THE TWO BABYLONS: or The Papal Worship Proved to be The Worship of Nimrod and his Wife). He claimed the Roman Catholic Church was a Babylonian mystery cult, and pagan, whereas Protestants worshipped the true Jesus and the true God. He contended that Roman Catholic religious practices are actually pagan practices grafted onto true Christianity during the reign of Constantine. This edition reprints the book edition, not the shorter pamphlet.
